Can you bring spare lithium batteries on a plane?
TSA's official answer, checked against tsa.gov on 2026-07-02.
Carry-on bag yes
Spare (uninstalled) lithium batteries go in carry-on only. Limits — lithium-ion up to 100 Wh per battery; lithium-metal up to 2 g lithium. 101–160 Wh — up to two, with airline approval.
Checked bag no
Spare/loose lithium batteries are prohibited in checked bags (fire risk). This page covers spares — batteries installed in devices follow the device's rules.
Liquids, gels and aerosols in carry-on follow the TSA 3-1-1 rule. The final decision always rests with the TSA officer at the checkpoint.
